Kirkby Stephen Silver Band arose by public subscription in the late 19th century. The exact date is uncertain, but there was certainly a band in existence in 1857. We owe our existence to the charismatic founder Joseph Parkinson, and his son J C Parkinson who went on to be the band conductor for over 50 years.
The band has had its ups and downs over the years, and was reformed for example in 1900. There were periods during the two world wars when the band was not playing in public.
Kirkby Stephen Silver Band is a part of the life blood of the local community, and has marked all the important events of the town, both religious and secular for 150 years.
